Equipped with a large-format camera and Ilford film, Rhisiart is currently photographing around the communities of Gwynedd and its slate heritage for his first planned monograph:
"The Mountains of Our Fathers"
Inspired by R.S. Thomas’s poem “Welsh Landscape”, the project focuses on the dramatic landscape, weathered slate quarries hidden in the mountains, and the preservation work of the heritage railways that keep steam locomotives running through the old mining communities.
The project aims to interpret the past, while documenting the present. How the slate industry has carved the land, shaped communities, and left its marks.
As R.S. Thomas reminds us:
“You cannot live in the present,
At least not in Wales.”
